Gender Differentiated Impacts of REDD to be Addressed in REDD Social Standards

Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) was prepared for an initiative of CARE International and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) to develop voluntary Social and Environmental Standards for REDD entitled. With respect to social impacts, REDD clearly presents some opportunities for positive social outcomes but also risks of serious negative outcomes. Current discussion on social impacts of REDD is weak with respect to the gender dimension. In development of the proposed REDD standards it is very important to address this gap so that the standards take full account of the differentiated rights, roles and responsibilities of men and women, and promote gender equality and equity in REDD policy and practice. The aim of this paper is therefore to identify and assess the gender differentiated impacts of REDD and key gender-related issues that must be addressed in development of REDD social standards
