REUSE OF HUMAN EXCRETA IN AGRICULTURE

Power Point presentation from the Ecosan research project of CREPA in the village of Sabtenga, Burkina Faso.

  • There are at least in the world 2.6 billion people without improve sanitation. Most of these reside in rural area in Africa and Asia.
  • The increasing of the population in Africa lead to enourmous problems of sanitation: 43 percent of the population of subsaharian Africa-over 303 million people had no acces to basic sanitation in the year 2000.
  • In West Africa many people have not latrines and continue to defecate outside their house in the nature leading to degrading the environment and health.

This is why Crepa, addressing the problems attached to water suplly and sanitation questions, has taken a great interest to the concept of ecological sanitation based on the management and upgrading of human excreta as a fertiliser ressource in agriculture.

This institution with the financial support of SIDA is exploring ecological solutions in seven countries in West Africa, throught pilots projects in urban, peri-urban and rural areas.
