On 19February, WOCAN hosted a breakfast meeting for the members of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for Environment (NWMLE) to share results of the discussions from the Global Meeting of the Women’s Leadership Circles and to identify points which can be raised within the UNEP Governing Council sessions. The meeting was held in Nairobi during UNEP’s First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Forum and WOCAN’s Global Meeting of WLCs.
WLC members Nanu Ghatani (farmer from Nepal), Priscah Mayende (farmer from Kenya), Alphina Ndlovana, (decision maker from South Africa) and Annabelle Waititu, (coordinator, Kenya WLC) reviewed the WLC objectives and highlighted the issues faced by women farmers. Members of the NWMLE including H.E. Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi, of the Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs, South Africa; Elena Dumitru, Secretary of State from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Romania; Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy and Acting Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights, Maldives and others expressed their support for future collaboration with the WLC. The NWMLE has invited WOCAN to join as a member, and proposed to organize a joint session of WOCAN and NWMLE at COP19.
