Gender and Organizational Development Workshop, Bangkok

A two-day workshop on Gender and Organizational Development was conducted by the training team from WOCAN, which was organized by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) / the Embassy of Sweden on 22 and 23 March, 2017 in Bangkok. Twenty participants (7 women, 13 men) from 14 partner organizations attended the workshop.

The objectives of the workshop were two-fold:

  1. Conduct a gender analysis on their individual organizations to assess the opportunities and gaps from a gender mainstreaming perspective
  2. Develop Action Plans for gender mainstreaming

The objectives were underscored by the development of a common platform of understanding amongst participants for some key concepts that included the following:

  • Definition of Gender and Gender Mainstreaming
  • Gender Mainstreaming in the project cycle
  • Gender Mainstreaming in the Organization
  • The importance of privileging gender over other forms of social exclusion

The participants were introduced to an organizational framework which consists of three Dimensions and 9 Elements. This is a useful instrument to conduct gender analysis of their own organizations.The the participants were instructed to conduct an additional level of analysis using the SWOT framework.Then they were introduced to the four areas of planning and encouraged to design their action plans on the following themes:

  1. Developing Political Commitment from the leadership
  2. Developing Capacity for Gender
  3. Developing Accountability
  4. Enhancing Organizational Culture
