Training on Gender Integrated Planning, FAO, Kenya

Barun Gurung, WOCAN Lead trainer, facilitated the training with support from Larissa Dominique Fuentes, FAO and Annabell Waitutu, (IEWM) from 27-30 September in the Gelian Hotel in Machakos, Kenya. The 17 Participants (12 women and 5 men) included members of the National Committee of Family Farming from different constituencies, including NGOs, farmer organizations, government representatives, women organizations, among others. Additionally, FAO officials engaged in the training with the intention of building their capacities to bring a gender and social inclusion perspective into their daily responsibilities.

The training on reframing leadership for gender equality for family farming was implemented as part of the ongoing collaboration between WOCAN and FAO. The workshop took place under the framework of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming, building on the efforts to promote the implementation of Pillar 3 of the Global Action Plan: Promote gender equity and the leadership role of women in family farming. Moreover, the training aimed at strengthening capacities of stakeholders involved in the development of the National Action Plan of Family Farming.

The training provided an overview of the different capacities that need to be built to promote the leadership role of women in family farming, including capacities for Gender Integrated Planning, Networking and M&E. It introduced a new type of relational leadership and, as the first skill, participants requested to focus the training on gender integrated planning. Participants learnt how to identify one problem and build solutions through concrete outcomes, outputs, and activities, considering the impact they wanted to achieve, potential risks and means of verification.

As future capacity building needs, the NCFF requested to escalate the training among different members of the communities and to strengthen additional capacities to strengthen leadership, such as: deepening the training in gender integrated planning, monitoring and evaluation, communication and negotiation skills.
