W+ Standard Measurement for GCF-Funded UNDPUNREDD Project in Ghana

WOCAN is currently conducting field measurements in northern Ghana for the Ghana Shea Landscape Emissions Reduction Project (GSLERP), under the UNREDD program. Using the W+ Standard, the team—comprised of Daniele Ramiaramanana, Larissa Dominguez, and Storm Lewis—is measuring impacts in the domains of Knowledge and Education and Income and Assets.

The W+ Standard is for the first time being applied to a Green Climate Fund-supported project implemented by UNDP/UNREDD and the Global Shea Butter Alliance.

The project will restore degraded savannah forests and strengthen livelihoods; develop women’s cooperatives, enhance local processing capacity, and build skills in agroforestry, governance, and business, ultimately increasing women’s incomes and access to global markets. Shea landscapes are important sources of carbon storage, and they can improve adaptive capacities by making ecosystems more resilient. The harvesting of nuts from shea trees which are used in cosmetics is a key source of livelihoods in the region and provides critical economic support to women in particular.

The W+ Standard will quantify results in the Knowledge & Education and Income & Assets domains.
