W+ Standard Measurement of SEWA’s Solar Project in India

W+ Standard Team led by Dr. Barun Gurung and Nisha Singh, WOCAN Board Member, is in Gujarat, India to apply the W+ Standard to the Gold Standard Carbon project on Sustainable Salt Farming using Solar PV Systems.

In the Rann of Kutch, India’s premier salt-producing region contributing over 75% of the nation’s output, this transformative solar-powered water pump initiative is changing traditional salt farming practices. This strategic approach replaces conventional diesel pumps with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, providing a cost-effective energy solution for extracting brine from subterranean and surface sources. The Gujarat Solar Project results in emission reduction and encourages the adoption of renewable energy to improve the Agariyas’ (salt farmers) livelihood.

We are partnering with VNV and CGAP FSIC (Financial Services for Inclusive Carbon markets). Using the W+ Standard, the project will measure and monetize the benefits experienced by 1,200 SEWA women—including increased income and knowledge and skills gained.
