WOCAN at the 8th Annual Community-Based Adaptation Conference (CBA8) in Nepal

On 27-30 April, Kanchan Lama, WOCAN Board Member, attended the 8th Annual Community-Based Adaptation Conference (CBA8) organized by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The CBA8 brought together over 400 stakeholders and practitioners in community-based adaptation (CBA) for field trips, plenaries and meetings, focusing on financing CBA, sharing best practices and integrating lessons learned into development planning.

Kanchan attended various panels and discussions and actively engaged with other GGCA members participating at the conference. The GGCA members developed a Resource Guide for Gender in CBA8, which includs key messages and recommendations to ensure community based adaptation and its funding is gender responsive. The conference concluded with the adoption of a Kathmandu Declaration on Financing Local Adaption, which calls for a focused and human rights-based approach to financing local adaptation to climate change.

On the final day of the conference, Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, addressed various points raised in the Kathmandu Declaration. She connected activities at the international level and under the auspices of Parties to the UNFCCC to the needs and actions of local communities. She pointed to finance that is being mobilized for multilateral efforts like the Adaptation Fund to support the work local communities are undertaking. However, she warned that much remains to be done, including a meaningful 2015 climate change agreement and scaling finance to the necessary levels. Watch Christiana’s speech.
