WOCAN at the Eighth Session of General Assembly’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goal…

On 3 Feb, Meena Bilgi, WOCAN Core Associate, presented WOCAN’s programs and projects at the “Conserving and restoring forests, oceans, ecosystems through recognizing the rights, needs and roles of women and their communities”, side event during the Eighth Session of General Assembly’s Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals in New York, USA. The event was co-organized by WOCAN, Women´s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), Global Forest Coalition, Population and Sustainable Development Alliance (PSDA), All India Women´s Conference (AIWC), Southeast Indigenous Peoples Center and Women’s Major Group. This side event explored the importance of community governance for conservation of ecosystems, forests and oceans, and the right, needs and role of women in this respect. It highlighted the Convention on Biodiversity and its Aichi targets as an overarching framework for a potential integrated sustainable development goal on ecosystem conservation and restoration.

Meena also attended the side event on “Gender Equality and Women’s Rights – Key for success of Sustainable Development Goals post 2015” on 6 Feb, organized by the Women’s Major Group. This side event looked at the key priorities for SDG’s regarding gender equality and women’s rights including SRHR, conflict and violence and the intersection of systemic issues that create pervasive gender inequalities, particularly in the informal work economy and the unpaid care economy.
