African Women’s Network for Community Forest Management (REFACOF)

Cameroon

REFACOF’s mission is to promote women’s rights in Africa and influence policies and practices for gender equity in land and forest tenure. REFACOF was born in the wake of the international conference on the theme “Forest Tenure, Governance and Enterprise; New Opportunities for West and Central Africa”, held in Yaoundé, Cameroon from May 25 to 29, 2009 and co-organized by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Government of Cameroon through the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF). REFACOF thus stems from the desire of 45 women from different countries in West Africa (Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal) and the center (Burundi, Cameroon, Gabon, CAR, DRC) to play a more active role in ongoing continental and international land and forestry reform processes.
