This briefing note argues that climate-induced land degradation is not only an environmental crisis but also a crisis of care and inequality. As droughts, floods and other climate impacts degrade land, the people who sustain ecosystems and livelihoods, including women, Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists and smallholder farmers, bear disproportionate burdens while often lacking secure land rights. Drawing on evidence from Uganda, Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka, the paper demonstrates how insecure tenure undermines climate resilience and sustainable land management. It calls for care-centred approaches that secure land rights, strengthen inclusive governance and invest in the people whose stewardship is essential for restoring land and building resilience.
